Job Summary

GJC is hiring a part-time Legal Advisor. The successful candidate will be a strategic lawyer and advocate with deep gender equality and human rights experience. This is a hybrid position that requires presence in New York City with periodic international and domestic travel.  GJC is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position; candidates must have prior US work authorization.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Legal Analysis & Drafting:

    • Perform expert-level legal research and analysis in support of GJC projects.

    • Produce legal submissions to UN bodies, amicus briefs and observations to various courts, governmental bodies, policy reports, background briefs, , and op-eds to advance GJC’s objectives.

    • Leverage GJC’s outputs to generate domestic and international pressure to address global gender equality issues.

    • Provide technical expertise on abortion rights and international standards related to sexual and gender based violence.

  • Strategic Advocacy:

    • Develop relationships with key stakeholders, including relevant UN actors, policymakers, governmental and intergovernmental representatives, human rights organizations, grassroots actors and other civil society partners.

    • Respond to and anticipate relevant news events or developments relating to GJC’s mission and work, and identifies opportunities for GJC’s programmatic work.

    • Identify and highlight key political and human rights trends, and analyze abuses within the broader political, social, and economic context to highlight factors contributing to abuses and avenues for effective change;

    • Work collaboratively with other legal and programme staff, including through the supervision and management of legal interns.

    • Promote & represent GJC at meetings, conferences, seminars, and before national, regional and international human rights bodies.

    • Strengthen and progress GJC’s advocacy efforts on accountability for sexual and gender-based violence and the promotion of gender equity in international law and institutions. This will include strategizing with senior leadership to develop and advance a gender-competent Crimes Against Humanity treaty, cultivating and coordinating broad-based global civil society engagement on the treaty, and supporting the development of GJC’s strategies to pursue accountability for genocide and crimes against humanity perpetrated in Myanmar.

Necessary Skills/Experience/Qualifications

  • A graduate degree in law.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in international law and advocacy, including substantive legal analysis, research, and writing.  Ability to  analyze international public, humanitarian, human rights, and criminal law from a gender perspective.

  • Fluency and advanced writing skills in English.

  • Exceptional proficiency in legal writing and research.

  • Expert knowledge of international human rights mechanisms and/or regional human rights mechanisms, international accountability mechanisms, and other substantive areas of GJC’s work.

  • Experience implementing a wide range of tactics and tools to advance advocacy goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Strong organizational skills and self-direction.

  • Sound negotiation skills, political astuteness and comfort in creating and developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours to accommodate developing events.

  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s human rights and GJC’s mission.

Desired Skills/Experience/Qualifications

  • Knowledge of, and experience in, UN advocacy spaces e.g., UN Security Council, Sixth Committee.

  • Experience in analyzing US federal, state and local law compliance with human rights obligations.

Salary

$42 per hour

Start date: September 1, 2023
